Note that Mattis is regularly addressed by media and others as "General" even though he's supposed to be serving in a civilian capacity

You keep the title even when you leave your post. That's why he's still referred to as President Barack Obama, even though he no longer holds the office. Govs are the same

Thank you for explaining the convention on this subject as if people are somehow unaware. The point here is that Mattis is serving in a civilian position (Secretary of Defense) and yet regularly gets referred to by his military title.

Americans cant wait to place a crown on someone's head. Got to give the Romans some credit. They lasted for another 200 yrs before they did the same.

Not when they have a CIVILIAN title. The civilian in fact should in our country be preferable, or is our government run by the military now?

If Clinton had become president would you have continued calling her Secretary Clinton? You switch to the more important title & Secretary of Defense certainly SHOULD be more important than general.

The whole practice of addressing politicians by titles & honorifics they have long ceased to hold (Speaker Gingrich; Secretary Clinton, etc.) is gross & reeks of lifetime aristocratic title. But it's extra creepy when it's *former* military people in civilian posts: https://twitter.com/mtracey/status/961308082264530944 …

He earned that title and he’s part of the reason you get to publicly disagree with it. Say “Thank you, General.”

It's also out of respect for his many years of service. I still call retired officers by their rank when we're both in civilian clothes. Does it really bother you that bad?

I'm just old-fashioned and believe that in a true democracy the highest honorific would be 'Citizen'.

Maybe there haven’t been many Secretaries who were also Generals so people don’t know the etiquette of what to call them. General Mattis probably doesn’t get offended when people call him General. He has bigger issues to worry about.
