I've always used my real name and picture on here, and I'm *not* wealthy. At all. I don't even *have* a savings account. Why would it be so bad for everyone to say who they are?

Because they could be penalized economically for expressing their political beliefs.

I've paid that price, too. Never hid my name.

It's obvious our country/world needs a LOT of work. Right? I think a sizeable chunk of the reason why we are where we are is because people won't stand up for what they believe anymore. There's *often* a penalty for doing what's right. The key is to do it anyway. 1/2

agree with the post. I’m not highly controversial but I’m also forced into a social media policy that means I represent my employer. That and given union association I like having a barrier between myself and work. Compelling full name would be a direct association.
-
Then again I’m someone who can hardly keep up with privileged people curating their new names (or handle) that they might have arbitrarily shared on social media. (Not talking people who go through gender therapy or witness protection.)

I would say fitting neatly into a range of acceptable opinion and economic and social privilege might account for this. I’m guessing what with twitter trolling it’d be fairly horrible for certain targeted people if they had to identify as their actual name.

Doubtful. It’s just that their views are not considered controversial.

Or, they do think about that. Maybe they don't want employees being able to hide from having their economic security threatened.

To me it's a slippery slope, if you have to go through personal verification on social media, then your personal info becomes more widely held, easier for would be thieves to steal or shady companies to sell
-
Optional verification can/should be available. Many people would happily verify given the opportunity. Anon trolls are free to anon troll. I'm free to ignore them, preferring to carry on a convo w/ Tom Smith from Wichita. No problem having a system for those of us that want it.

Because they'd have been hanged for treason. Not because it might've cost them money.
