    Michael Tracey Retweeted Eric Levitz

Wishing gang-rape upon a convicted person, no matter how vile the person's crimes, doesn't serve the interest of justice. It does the opposite. Cheering this judge's theatrics is sickhttps://twitter.com/EricLevitz/status/956253813878509568 …

    Michael Tracey added,

    Eric Levitz @EricLevitz
Call me crazy, but I don't think judges should tell defendants that they would like to see them get gang-raped. Not because Nasser deserves better, but because we live in a country with a prison rape epidemic. https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/17/us/larry-nassar-judge-sentencing/index.html … pic.twitter.com/IjGWbIzoO1

It's not pearl-clutching to point out that the United States carceral system is plagued by a heinous prison rape epidemic, and this judge is giving sick license to that epidemic

Nasser is heinous, and the prison rape epidemic plaguing the American carceral state is also heinous. These are not contradictory notions.

And it’s women who are cheering on women as survivors and a woman sentencing him. We humans are strange beasts.

Agreed. I hate it when supposed liberals invoke prison rape as justice served, I hear it all the time.

Her words also leave room for an appeal of the sentence. Just saying. She was unprofessional and did more damage to the victims.

Vile as it is for a judge to *wish* rape on a prisoner, I was maybe more disturbed by Judge Aquilina saying she had "just signed [Nasser's] death warrant."

Certainly its public sentiment, not for a judiciary to publicly proclaim.

The judge's speech (of course it had to be a woman!), made it a show trial. A lot of gender specifying and generalizing involved.

Letting victims read their statements was great. A judge playing to the media, making herself the story like a mash up of Judge Judy, Dr. Phil & Donald Trump is lame and damaging to our court system. Imo.
