Very timely thread. The surveillance vote this week highlights the fundamental superficiality of mainline Dems' self-serving rhetoric on "authoritarianism" over the past year.https://twitter.com/CoreyRobin/status/951992364423417857 …

Michael Tracey added,
The US government should be spying on foreign tyrants and terrorists. As long as we have oversight and a strong legal framework, there's nothing authoritarian about foreign intelligence collection.
You sound like every NSA apologist ever over the past 10 years, even as clear-cut evidence of abuses has continued to mount.
OK. Maybe those people are correct! I mean, why not just figure out what we don't want the NSA to collect and write a law that narrows their scope? Seems like the solution.
The law that the Democrats just scuttled would've narrowed the scope of what could be collected.
Funny how it's the Democrats' fault when they're the minority party and mostly voted against it!
Obviously it's also the "fault" of the majority of Republicans who voted for it. But the sponsor of the amendment was a Republican (Amash).
So? Most Democrats voted for the amendment, most Republicans voted against it. And, Republicans control Congress so they dictated the process here. They own it.
