Seems fair to assume that most of the Dem base would be firmly *against* vesting Trump with massive surveillance powers. So it stands to reason that the Dems who just voted for that did so out of sincere ideological conviction: commitment to the unfettered national security state

No, there were enough people who did not bat an eye at the idea of Obama expanding the surveilance state, if anything it seems the logical conclusion to that
