I definitely understand that there's some ugly Russophobia going on, but I don't think it's worth relying on @mtracey's reporting of it.

No need to "rely on my reporting." I produced the primary source email, which clearly states that "Russian descent" is now an investigatory criterion for the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Have you ever coded before? It's a conjunctive criteria. Russian-descended individuals aren't being targeted.

Yes, Russian-descended persons are explicitly being targeted in that the Senate Intel Committee has specified that "Russian descent" is among its investigatory criteria, along with engaging in "activities that related in any way to the political election process in the US"

The conjunctive criteria clearly targets people known by or associated with Charles C. Johnson with regards to interference in the US political process. The letter explicitly targeted Charles C. Johnson, it was sent to him. I appreciate your reporting but not the editorial.

The letter targeted Johnson in that it requested that he produce certain materials. Materials deemed relevant are any that relate to a person who is of Russian descent and engaged in "activities that related in any way to the political election process in the US"

Under these extraordinarily broad criteria, if Johnson had "reason to believe" that a campaign canvasser was of Russian descent, he would be obliged to hand over records related to the canvasser's activities.

Um, yeah. When one is subject of a counterintelligence investigation, one is asked to supply information about contacts with foreign nationals and those with close ties to foreign countries.

Having "Russian descent" does not necessarily make one a "foreign national" or someone with "close ties to foreign countries."

ok, no one here is a lawyer. it would be nice to hear from one, because it's not clear to me what sort of precedent, if any, is being set here - since it's "Russian descent" coupled with other criteria, and since it's a Senate intel cmte, not a judiciary decision

Correct, as noted in the original story, the request is currently 'voluntary' and therefore not necessarily legally challengeable. But for now I'm willing to call into question the propriety of using an ethnic characteristic as the basis of an investigatory inquest

I wish I had your aggressive confidence.

You seem to be aggressively asserting confidence that there's nothing to worry about here. As a skeptic of Congressional investigations which explicitly cite ethnic characteristics as a basis of their investigatory inquests, I tend to feel otherwise
