No, I would not describe Egypt's coup as US-backed. The US now backs the Sissi regime, but it did not back the coup.

Fair point. Kerry did appear to throw his weight behind it. On the local level and off record at the State Department, US diplomats were far more critical. But Kerry certainly trumps lower level diplomats.

Right. Kerry's posture was the primary basis for my describing it as US-backed, although clearly there were some countervailing views.
