Bigotry and empowered, unleashed mob violence is never as far away as you think it is.
-
Nazi Germany is actually quite far away and using that as your point of reference distorts analysis of the real problems we face.

Just remember, as Sinclair Lewis wrote, “It can’t happen here.”

Just remember, repeating cliches is not a substitute for thought.

1938 Germany didn't spring out of nowhere. It was a consistent failure of democratic institutions and norms especially in the conservative wing of German politics that ultimately lead to Kristallnacht. Trump's explicitly Islamophobic hate is very reminiscent of nazi antisemitism.

2017 is not analogous to 1938, its analogous to 1923. We need to stop it now before it gets to the 1938 version of fascism.

1938 matters because the meaningful comparison is to 1933 or 1934, and i'd like to keep it from sliding further. every time you apologize for trump or use antisemitic dogwhistle like "certain political subculture" you increase the risk of it.

So what do you think it would look like if such a regime *were* to appear here...or do you ascribe to American exceptionalism that says we are uniquely immune to it?
