Incoming NJ Governor Phil Murphy won by buying off local Democratic committees using the fortune he had amassed over 20 years at Goldman Sachs and flattering donors as DNC finance chair. Amazing how that could be spun as a "progressive" triumph given recent political history.

I see election day as an ideological win. People voted for even an establishment dem over the GOP agenda. plus some progressives won too

Yeah, there were some local races indicating that. But not really the marquee races.

We had a real progressive option with Green Party @KaperDaleForGov too bad Murphy bought the election.

This was the lowest voter turnout in history for a NJ gubernatorial election.

It's a loss for the GOP but a victory for the establishment. A bellwether perhaps, but not a victory for progressives.

I wasn't seeing anyone claiming this one as a victory for the left. They were all very clear that he was establishment, so I'm not sure what Michael is going for.

Dems calling this a victory is laughable. unfortunately, most people out there are either politically numb or biased. it's time to end this corporate duopoly. both sides look ridiculous and embarrassing to watch and listen to. #thirdparty

And @TomPerez was hyperventilating, flop sweating, and speaking in tongues over these GOP-lite “wins”.....like his life (at the very least his job) depended on it. He was so terribly relieved that night, his emotions came spilling out, everywhere!

I agree, I remember about 2 or 3 years ago when he started to get his name out. When you spend $21 million in a primary and the next person spends $3 million, there's a problem. I voted @JohnWisniewski in primary, @GreenPartyofNJ in general, I still glad he won over republican

Let's keep a close eye on him. The alternative was Chris Christie's bag lady Kim Guadagno. Corzine was another crooked Wall Streeter, who is responsible for the Christie win. #WeAreWatchingYou

Same thing is going to happen in Illinois, but it's not a Goldman Sachs fortune. Governor-ships are basically becoming hobbies.

It’s a relative thing. And as long as he pursues progressive policies, including reforming elections, does it matter as much how he got there? FDR and JFK were hardly grassroots animals, and LBJ was corrupt as hell — but I’m glad we had them!
