Nothing irritates a certain type of aggressively apathetic American more than the politicization of sports.

And by constantly throwing barbs, it's Trump who is accelerating the politicization of this domain. Could well engender a backlash.

I think I'd need more than a tweet to adequately answer that question.

such a great point. IMO in part because sports subsumes the communal, participatory energy people could otherwise be putting into politics.

That's definitely an element. They also conceptualize sports as a self-contained domain into which other social forces ought not intrude.

Who cares about athletes opinions? They're athletes not politicians. Doesn't affect you if they have a difference of opinion.

Just go to a ESPN comment section to verify this factual statement.

It should be a politics free zone but that's made impossible with today's spoiled, living in echo chamber athlete esp in NBA & NFL

Sports is inherently political. Cities build stadiums and sports definitely helped lead to civil rights movement among other things.

Athletes should be free to express political views. Just keep politics out of sports. Sports are a refuge from the ugliness of politics.
