The notion of "de-facto apology" is slippery and cynical. An "apology" is when someone affirmatively "apologizes" for the thing in question.

That said, most of the consistently anti-intervention figures I've come across have virtually never said a kind thing about Assad.

They're just slimed as "Assad apologists" because that's the easiest way to delegitimize their ethical and strategic critiques of US action.
