Have you noticed that teens and early 20s use the construction "person I'm talking to" to mean "person I'm romantically engaged with"

If you are "talking to" Bobby, that means you are in some ambiguous stage of courtship with Bobby -- a proto-relationship. Very curious.

Sometimes they'll even say, "we're texting" -- and that's supposed to connote, "we are in an incipient, experimental romantic relationship."

Both... although I think it's more often women talking about men. But somewhat even split.

We used the "talking to" descriptor in the early '90s. It was used by Black and Latino kids, not so much by White kids.

i think talking to esp with teens implies it hasnt been taken to a physical stage yet-- semi dating, mostly just texting a lot

Maybe it’s a regional thing. I’m in my early 40s, and I remember people saying “talking to” as a teenager living in Houston.
