It has to be to stressed just how extreme of an idea this is. It's never happened before in US history. It flies in the face of all "norms."

In
@EJDionne's world, there might as well have been no election. State legislatures could just select electors, and then they pick the Prez. -

Electors are bound to the popular will as expressed in their individual state, not nationally. So yes, they'd be "subverting popular will."
-
Many people viewed HRC as a uniquely dangerous, unfit candidate. Would've been preposterous for them to advocate an Electoral College coup.

Each state (along with DC) holds a popular vote contest, and Trump won a requisite number of those. This really isn't hard to grasp.

Do you really not grasp that calling a candidate "unqualified" is a subjective determination -- millions of others disagree

while the electors should (and will) elect Trump, don't call it "popular will." Trump won the system, not the popular vote.
-
Popular will as expressed by the Electoral College, which is the system for gauging popular will.

I'm not willing to say that there's "zero chance" of anything happening at this point. Mainstream figures advocating it.

They keep pointing to popular vote in an election that is not based on popular vote. The distinction seems lost on them.

Claiming it is subverting the popular will is the wrong argument, given the popular vote. Subverting Constitution is accurate.
