Trump's narrow win in Wisconsin (by 1.0%) had to be the biggest stunner of the night. Had not voted GOP since the Reagan 1984 landslide.

Trump's campaign clearly sensed he was surging late in Michigan, thus the intense focus. His final "midnight rally" was in Grand Rapids.

Obama received 828,940 votes in Iowa in 2008. HRC received 652,437 in 2016. That's a 21.3% plunge for Democrats over 8 years. Staggering.

Was it a 1-for-1 exchange or did GOP voters come out in roughly the same numbers as before?

Nationally it looks like GOP turnout was down a little bit but Dem turnout was WAY down. No ideological shift; a motivation gap.

But that probably wouldn't explain what happened in Iowa, where there are few minority voters.

If GOP turnout was same as 2012, then just suggests white Dems weren't motivated to vote for their nominee.

I wonder if they grew in number or were just more motivated by Trump than Romney (which wouldn't be surprising). Thinking out loud.
