Marijuana would be legal nowhere in the US but for citizen-initiated referendums. (5 more states coming in Nov) Curiously unmentioned by NYT
Democracy is dangerous when it infringes individual rights. Otherwise, it's ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Those popular referendums legalizing marijuana and same-sex marriage across the US sure are dangerous!
referendum is not synonymous with democracy
This is the second time in a few weeks that a large publication trots out this meme. Must be a directive from @CFR_org
The elites value only outward appearance of democracy, to make what they already chose for their own purposes seem OK.
There is no doubt that a poorly designed democracy will likely make mistakes, maybe even more than our oligarchy.
M'eh, democracy isn't THAT dangerous, when you consider who votes these days.pic.twitter.com/zfD3pgcwAw
Ah yes because giving urban Colombians power to shut down a peace deal for rural Colombians is direct democracy in its fullest.
I was in Students for Democratic Society. Democracy /= majoritarian rule. Particularly not when turnout is less than 40%.
Referendums should not have legitimacy w/ less than 40% turnout. But that's bc I believe in participatory democracy & shit.
This is why I'm nervous about a "Trump wins popular/HRC wins electoral" scenario. This shit will get so much worse.
By NYTimes logic Switzerland should be a mad max style barren wasteland. They've had 51 referendums in last 5 years.
Thank the universe for that. But Tracey & friends are like "respect the will of 50.24%".
Gay marriage referendum in California, DITTO.
