I tend to think the prevailing elite liberal "distrust" of police is relatively superficial, but it's undoubtedly there in some form.

So this is a marked shift, and you can see how it would provoke commensurate backlash among Democratic-leaners who generally adulate police.

It's a case of not preaching what they practice. NPR whites liberals are actually very deferential to the police

But the Right (traditionally pro-authoritarian) seems to be undergoing its own version of this shift, post-Tea Party.
