The politicization of athletes really is an interesting development: this stuff would've been unthinkable in the 90s http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/kansas-city-chiefs-marcus-peters-raises-fist-anthem/story?id=42014459 …

My sense is that the ubiquity of social media is an operative variable -- no more PR middlemen -- but something else must be going on, too.

The real-time validation one receives from social media means protest is never truly undertaken in isolation: it's a communal endeavor.

Also interesting is that management seems far more tolerant of divisive political expression than you would've expected in the recent past.

I think you have to read that as a consequence of the movements. they aren't "tolerant" by choice.

the management incentives have shifted as a result of successful organizing. disciplining players may not be the wise choice.

That, but I think they perceive a business incentive in allowing for expression. Generates interest, appeals to certain demos.

of course. i'm saying the same thing. but the reason the business incentive exists is bc BLM organizing has been effective.

that's how organizing works. it doesn't change the hearts of the powerful. it creates incentive structures that force their hands.

Yes, but I'm not sure how much "organizing" per se is responsible for this: how much organizing have the NFL protesters done?

I think the far more operative development is technological change: there's always been organizers chugging along.

hard to say. BLM has benefited enormously from technology, but tech doesn't explain the mvmt nor account for everything its done

I'm not saying they've organized at all. protestors outside NFL have created beneficial conditions for protest inside.
