One issue. You cannot obtain consent from a deceased person to use their sudden murder in service of electing a presidential candidate.

Parading out the Benghazi victims at the GOP convention was especially noxious. There are gradations of propriety, clearly.

There's huge debate over ethical issues involving whether/how to honor the will of the dead. Formerly one of my areas of philosophic study.

For me depends on the intelligence of relative. Manipulation happens. Even victims shouldnt be enabled to air unproven accusations.

If the mother of a victim wants to promote unity/peace: cool. Asked to promote a bill they havent read/dont understand: not cool

It's repulsive and reason #1 these conventions should be done away with, didn't like it at rnc either

In a lot of cases, the families provide the moral core of local activism. Boosting that can be valuable.

Because of course they have no agency and couldn't possibly feel passionately that they must speak out about gun violence...

100% in favor of using death as a springboard for getting shit done, less so if it's just pageantry.

I'm slightly uneasy about it, too, but then again, fixing the problem involves politics.
