You can draw a direct through line from the "Ground Zero Mosque" fiasco in 2010 to today, culminating with the nomination of Trump.
-
-
-
Romney opposed the "Ground Zero Mosque" by issuing an anodyne written statement. He let others do the inflammatory bomb-throwing.
-
But Romney was just as culpable for galvanizing anti-Muslim sentiment as the bomb-throwers, if not more so.
-
Trump opposed the Ground Zero Mosque, but from a pragmatic "common sense" standpoint, not an ideologically-driven standpoint.
-
But Trump could observe the ideology-driven opposition congealing into a potent political force, abetted by people like Romney.
-
So later Trump, eyeing a 2012 run, immersed himself in the ideological movement -- so he could at least become conversant in their rhetoric.
-
He reached out to Gingrich, who fanatically opposed the mosque, and people like doomsday conspiracist media proprietor Joe Farah.
-
From there Trump was exposed to the gamut of anti-Obama conspiracy theories, the most salient of which at the time was birtherism.
-
Mitt's ilk benefited politically by allowing this stuff to fester, while ostensibly keeping a distance. Now they feign outrage. Don't buy it
