Elites' reaction to Brexit mimics their reaction to Trump: blame the amorality of ordinary people rather than reckon with elite failure

@mtracey But hang on - media elite has sustained anti-EU sentiment for 30 yrs unless you somehow count Rothermere Murdoch etc as non-elite.

@Mje51 There can be fractures within the elite but broadly speaking Remain was favored by the UK's political, cultural, and media elite

      3. Michael Elliott ‏@Mje51 25 Jun 2016

@mtracey I just don't buy that as a record of last 30 years. How much more "elite" can you get than Johnson, Murdoch, Telegraph, Moore, etc.

      4. Michael Tracey ‏@mtracey 25 Jun 2016

@Mje51 You deny that Remain had the support of a vast majority of political, cultural, and economic elites?

      5. Michael Elliott ‏@Mje51 25 Jun 2016

@mtracey Yes I do. The word "elite" doesn't mean "reads the Guardian."

@Mje51 That's not what I'm taking it to mean.

@mtracey then I think we're lost cos it sure sounds like it.

      8. Michael Tracey ‏@mtracey 25 Jun 2016

@Mje51 "Elite" is by necessity an over-simplification. There are of course traditionally eurosceptic Tory elites.

@mtracey @Juzwik Some Elites want #Brexit, some don't. But the poor will suffer more with #Brexit.

@meNabster @mtracey @Juzwik Have you heard some Brits blame everything on foreigners who choose to make the UK their home? SMH.

@TanyaKasim @mtracey @Juzwik That's divide and conquer intox PR from the Tory #Murdoch team and @TheSun newspaper.

@mtracey Some truth to that. However, those ordinary people let demagogues fool them into hitting at the scapegoat EU instead of the Tories.

@graygoods Now the real campaign against the Tories can begin. Much was on hold due to the unique circumstances of the referendum.

@mtracey Labour supporters who voted Leave acted like shooting their own leg off to get rid of an infected toe. 8-/

@mtracey You may think the shortterm advantage against the Tories outweighs the serious longterm consequences. I don't think so. 8-/

@graygoods I think the short-term disadvantages are likely outweighed by the long-term advantages. EU falling apart in any case.

@mtracey You appear to me like yet another US journo who has no real clue about EU issues. Are you even aware Corbyn is in dire straits now?

      7. Michael Tracey ‏@mtracey 26 Jun 2016

@graygoods Thanks, I'm familiar with EU issues. Corbyn has faced a mutiny since last Sept. He still has support from Labour rank-and-file.

@mtracey Corbyn supported Remain. How can you cheer for Leave, then? This doesn't make sense.
