Lots of confusion about the nature of causation today, from @jonathanchait to Clarence Thomaspic.twitter.com/c4akSNaCNd
Here's the chain of causation. Illegal stop --> discovery of warrant --> arrest --> search. Each step "caused" the next.
It makes no metaphysical sense to assert that the casual chain can be retroactively "broken" -- it's already occurred! Unbelievable.
I am going to guess that Clarence Thomas has never read David Hume.
he wanders back and forth between malign intent and causation without a care
Hinging the argument on causation is what's bewildering -- there'd be ways to justify this without undermining metaphysics.
it's oddly sloppy language because he clearly doesn't mean "causation" in the sense that any reader would
he means "the warrant is a fact, and knowing it is a bell that can't be unrung". then standard police procedure takes over.
Yeah, I don't get why that point needed to be made with reference to "causation"
