Mateen prayed at a local mosque 4 times a week. Flatly denying any possibility of a religious component to this won't fly for most Americans
Was religious belief the overriding motivator for his act? We don't know yet. We do know he was seen as "pious" and pilgrimaged to Mecca.

Point being -- denying the possibility that religious belief could've played a significant role in his decision-making is just obtuse.
-
Does this mean that co-religionists must somehow "answer for him," or have any kind of special obligation to condemn his acts? No.
-
And religious belief can clearly intersect with other "motivator" categories, like mental illness, hyper-machismo, social isolation, etc.
