Was religious belief the overriding motivator for his act? We don't know yet. We do know he was seen as "pious" and pilgrimaged to Mecca.

Point being -- denying the possibility that religious belief could've played a significant role in his decision-making is just obtuse.
-
Does this mean that co-religionists must somehow "answer for him," or have any kind of special obligation to condemn his acts? No.
-
And religious belief can clearly intersect with other "motivator" categories, like mental illness, hyper-machismo, social isolation, etc.

A perceived need to avenge fellow Afghans may have been a motivator as well.
