Shorter point: Anyone who think American Sniper celebrates the Iraq war is either a lunatic or hasn't seen it.

@tomgara Kyle is portrayed as having killed prolifically for just reasons. The movie therefore functions as a celebration of the war.

@mtracey They were just in the very narrow sense of what you'd expect a soldier in a war to do. There was no hint of it being a noble war.

@tomgara Kyle is a straightforwardly valorous protagonist. The viewer empathizes with him, and by extension the cause he is killing for.

@mtracey OK, I disagree but we probably won't get anywhere.

@tomgara It's a bit odd that you deem anyone who takes an opposing view a "lunatic." Seems a pretty reasonable interpretation of the movie.

@mtracey yeah maybe i overextended. but there's no suggestion in the movie, anywhere, that iraq had a noble cause or did any good.

@tomgara The focus on Kyle's heroism and selflessness more effectively celebrates the war than an overt discussion of its aims would have.

@mtracey You see lots of heroism and bravery & toughness in Vietnam movies, none of them act like Vietnam was a good or just war.

@tomgara @mtracey I'm not sure i agree with that. I actually think many Vietnam movies glorify acts of war and denegreate Vietnamese.
