GOP presidential nominees in recent history have routinely gotten savaged by the party just a few years later. Romney, McCain, W. Bush to some extent. Whereas Dems venerate their previous nominees: Hillary, Obama (obviously), even Kerry/Gore. Interesting contrast.

We should include Bush Sr. in that lineup. And Senator Dole didn't stay popular in the GOP for long either.

And thinking further back: Nixon and Ford are hardly ever mentioned by today's GOP. Only Reagan. And Goldwater didn't make friends in GOP with his pro-gay activism.

they get savaged twice - once by the democrats during the race, then by their own when they lose.

Only that GOP has become the party of rabid loyalty. Any independent thinking or bucking the party line is grounds for immediate expulsion from the flock. Dems currently more focused on hating current GOP then on party purity tests.

Maybe b/c Romney and McCain were more focused on what they think is right instead of what the voters want.

How is this possibly true. McCain was revered, and W has been slowly undergoing media rehab, while he should really be in The Hague.

Agreed, the GOP was infiltrated. Take Trump out of the equation and I doubt you'd see the phenomenon Michael describes. Hell, substitute Bernie for Trump in 2016 and you'd see the reverse, the neolibs would be as reviled as the neocons are today.

Perhaps because they effectively disappeared from politics, while McC and R continued to have to take positions in the Senate

They're savaged for not being conservative enough. Dems venerate moderates, while the left savages them for not being progressive enough. The differences then seems to be the way Dems openly oppose their own ostensible base.

But why are they celebrated when they're on top? Conservative principles are NOT the reason GOP voters stand with him.
