Twitter has gradually added features to enable high-profile users to insulate themselves from criticism, with the "hide replies" feature being the latest example. This is done in the name of combatting "toxicity." Of course, people sometimes deserve "toxic" criticism

The original novelty of Twitter was that all users were fundamentally on the same playing field. That kind of "egalitarianism" -- for all its faults -- is now seen as passé or even evil. So the designers, largely in response to media pressure, are increasingly abolishing it

Facebook and Twitter, with all its faults and kooks, are (were) the closest modern America's ever gotten to the Athenian agora, where every citizen had a voice. Our founders were horrified by their direct democracy and would be proud of this kind of revolting development.

This was all part of the allure of twitter - giving peasants the voice that the elites weren’t aware they had - and not letting them ignore it. So Twitter wants to reconstruct the bubbles - another elitist platform.

It’s because it was the only place we were KICKING their milquetoast asses. Spanking them big time. It was the only avenue we had to make an end run around their Corporate Propaganda. So of course, they had to do something about that, so they shut it down. No descent allowed!

every online platform is “egalitarian” until huge amounts of money get involved, then each platform clamps down, users change platforms and the cycle begins again.
