Is it even legal for a political candidate to give voters large cash payments? There's a world in which that could be described as... graft?

...no, promising to institute wealth-redistribution programs when in power is not analogous to a *candidate* offering to issue cash payments while *seeking* elective office

Exactly. One has institutional sanction and the other is just a sleazy seduction technique.

its a minute difference; direct bribe vs indirect bribe. apply this logic to politicians turned lobbyists. would you not consider these politicians bought by those industries?

It's a sweepstakes without strings attached so I can see how it's totally legal. Similar sweepstakes have been used in the past to reimburse travel expenses to DNC convention.

I growingly see these small checks (local initiative is $14/wk) evenly distributed to all as scraps & a cynical maneuver to undermine further material change / services for the poor. It’s like Nike handing out T-shirts to schoolkids rather than being taxed heavily to fund schools

This is just a formal question. It shouldn't come from campaign funds. Otherwise it's on the level of a tax deductible lottery.

Why is this only an issue when the money goes to most or all Americans? But somehow when massive wealth is redistributed from the bottom to the top through tax policy, bailouts, and corrupt deficit spending, somehow that's OK. Trickle down is fine, but growing up is socialism.

When politicians promise huge tax cuts to their rich backers, and policies that will force Americans into enriching energy, pharmaceutical, military, and insurance industries that hold artificial monopolies. How's that not buying votes and support?
