*whispers* the US doesn't need to have a "deal" with the Taliban to withdraw from Afghanistan. As you may recall, the US invaded without any "deal"

You need a deal when the Taliban will be controlling roughly 90% of the world's opium poppy supply. Come on @mtracey you have to keep the heroin supply available to combat China's fentanyl monopoly, lol.

Trump wants the appearance of being a good negotiator when he withdraws to push back against being called reckless or cowardly by the warhawks. Now we're stuck *again*

Invasions are disastrous but so is leaving a power vacuum that'll only lead to more civil war and hardships for the people of Afghanistan.

I hear this about every country the US invades. Perhaps the US should consider this issue *before* it attacks rather than after. Actually, the time to consider this should have been after the US proxy war with the USSR...when it left the Afghan people to the war/drug lords.

the complexities of this relationship now are far from our understanding. I want out as badly as the next person, but I refrain from commenting on policy because we don't have a clue as to the nuances and intricacies of the now.

Actually, any deal with the enemy is needed, so that, if/when they violate the terms, the US can legally justify returning or at least, launching air and missal strikes.

I want to march right out as much as anyone. What do we do with the “collaborators” the taliban will inevitably imprison or kill once we leave? Perhaps we offer them asylum like we did to Vietnamese?

The point of the withdrawal agreement is to justify that invasion - somehow.

That's true, but we also have to then accept that pulling out means handing Afghanistan over to the Taliban. I'm not necessarily against it; but it is a reality that must be considered.

US got out of Vietnam and Cambodia without a deal and Pol Pot only killed a few million people. What’s the big deal when Western Civilization cuts and runs in front of crazies who will attack us again aa soon as they settle scores at home? It will take a least a few years!
