Elements of the Taliban have been committing attacks sporadically for the entire the duration of the Afghanistan war, so if one more attack means Trump is just going to impulsively call off withdrawal negotiations, he was never serious about the negotiations in the first place

That's just the problem: if there's no partner to negotiate with who can call a halt to attacks and make it stick then there's no point in negotiating.

18 year anniversary of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan is next month. We are close to a young soldier going to Afghanistan who wasn't even born when war started.

It’s optics and public perception particularly for his militaristic base. Don’t take the tweets literally. Negotiations are happening.

Splinter groups at the soccer stadium arguing. We've seen that movie before. Pretty much leaving us with signing useless agreements. Odds are any agreement just assures some revenue stream to those at the table.

Might be a bit of an overstatement. The fact that Khalilzad has been able to negotiate for this long without the talks falling apart shows that Trump was serious. Something changed. Either way, people are upset about exactly the wrong aspect of this story.
