Seeing as Gen. Mattis is currently on a lucrative book tour, maybe someone can ask him about the time he offered to personally travel to Amazon HQ to swear in Jeff Bezos for a Defense Dept. advisory position, even though Bezos had no security clearancehttps://www.propublica.org/article/how-amazon-and-silicon-valley-seduced-the-pentagon …

Sounds like Mattis didn't learn any lessons from Urozgan 2001, where he refused to send in Marine helos to rescue troops & a copter from Uzbekistan had to fly in to exfiltrate. He wanted to wait until the timing was right. The men who died didn't appreciate his nuanced view.

While I get why the “beltway bandits” trope is being applied to Silicon Valley, w/o understanding - or explaining to readers - the very structured Fed procurement process it’s hard for readers to believe the Advisory Council could exist w/o unethically influencing contracts...

... and of course there’s some degree of influence, as described, in the fact a contract even exists. Our fighter jets ran on technology from the 70’s/80’s until this year in some cases. Our tech infrastructure is marginally better - but only marginally. And it’s hurting us. ...

I get the sense the longer this book tour goes on the more likely it turns into a reputation destruction tour as people learn more and more about yet another seemingly respectable person who willingly worked for trump.

Mattis was hired almost entirely on the basis of his nickname "Mad Dog" with it later becoming clear that he was a puppy dog for the status quo, aka the deep state, aka the military industrial complex.
