Marianne Williamson is right to question the efficacy of anti-depressants. As she told me, people have every reason to be skeptical of whether the pharmaceutical giants making huge profits off these drugs have "pure intent"https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-marianne-williamson-has-a-point-about-psychiatric-medication-20190823-4mv7ef4ccfcptcky2sxqecutym-story.html …

Do you remember the propagandistic campaigns that accompanied the introduction f of SRIs in the 80s and 90s? "Better than normal." "They should put it in the water supply." Later: "Yeah, some increase in suicidality. You def want to keep an eye on that."

"Williamson's comments are useful" is a great epitaph. Were they useful when she suggested praying for AIDS patients or questions vaccines. I only buy the snake oil that I know I like from Williamson is not a good take.

How dare you suggest evil, greedy motives. "Free market" capitalists only wish to help people and profit is a secondary consideration. To suggest otherwise is cynical.

Because it was the same motive that created the despair in the first place

The issue is that these medications are still underutilized and we have an epidemic of depression and suicide, and we don’t need to be exaggerating the risks and downplaying the benefit.

Something not mentioned that I think is worth adding: litigation and unrealistic expectation as a root cause of overprescribing across every specialty.

There are environmental & physiological SOURCES of despair. Environmental should never be medicated unless it is known from the onset that environment is responsible & patient is aiming to change surroundings/situation. These prescriptions MUST be temporary-they’re misused OFTEN

Also these companies admit that there is no hard science behind the serotonin mechanism. They have not isolated that process and observed it. It's a theory. A multi-billion dollar theory.

I have a lot of criticism of how the mental health system operates, but the drugs work and often when nothing else does. Besides, Williamson thinks prayer cures disease, she's a loon.

I don't know what Williamson said but the medicalization of despair is hardly new. Treating despair as a problem of the nerves, or the blood, etc, having a bodily cause has a long long history in many cultures.

Really, Williamson is such a charlatan, even if she believes what she is saying. I'm surprised you take an interest. This actually is interesting as to the medical history of treating depression (one German researcher in 1900 traced it back to Homer)https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4087154/ …

Much like the profit motive behind these same pharma companies producing ever newer untested (independently) vaccinations & using FDAs revolving door to ensure not only ubiquity, but MANDATORY injection of their product in all the nation’s children. This is also worth questioning.

1. The medicalization of contagious disease is also a very new development in human history. It doesn't follow from that fact alone that it's bad. 2. We should scrutinize the economic motive. But we also shouldn't encourage people to experiment with cave man medicinal remedies.
