Marianne Williamson is right to question the efficacy of anti-depressants. As she told me, people have every reason to be skeptical of whether the pharmaceutical giants making huge profits off these drugs have "pure intent"https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-marianne-williamson-has-a-point-about-psychiatric-medication-20190823-4mv7ef4ccfcptcky2sxqecutym-story.html …

Williamson's comments are useful because she's talking about the medicalization of despair (a very new development in human history) through a political frame. BigPharma is widely loathed. Why shouldn't the economic motive behind the sudden ubiquity of these drugs be scrutinized?

dude, it's not "people claiming", these things can and do work, even if prescription protocols can see some improvement

Williamson also comes from the self-help industry where they profit from telling you positive psychology can solve all your problems.

Also a link between those and mass shootings. Doesn't get a lot of coverage, but anti-depressants found in the system of damn near every one of them.

Bottom line: It is appropriate to ask questions while keeping an open mind. Unfortunately our society doesn’t want to allow critical thought.

Again, clinically depressed people aren't depressed because of life events. They're depressed because of brain chemistry. If depression were purely a function of how your life is going, then rich, successful, beautiful people wouldn't kill themselves. But they do.

Yes it’s that understanding the root despair. Disconnected from our souls and our purpose, me thinks.

At the risk of being glib, anyone wishing to understand why there is despair in our society need only read user comments on social media. That, and economic forces sapping meaning and purpose out of the lives of many.

First and foremost its a chemical imbalance. While overprescription and diagnosis is absolutely an issue, and we should be skeptical of the doctors making those calls. It's important not to confuse this with skepticism over treatment.

Depression isn't per se about feeling sad it's about being sad. There are lots of reasons people feel sad. But SSRIs are designed to rebalance your neuroendocrine system so that reuptake of feel good compounds like serotonin is reduced and consequently anxiety and depression

It's interesting that you offer your own experience with Zoloft as indicative of some more general pattern, while refusing to extend the same courtesy to those who have different experiences. You only concede there are others who "claim" to have had positive experiences.... wtf?

Isn't it the medical professionals who are prescribing these drugs? What do profits have to do with whether or not a doctor prescribes the drug? Does supply and demand not work in the drug business?
