Marianne Williamson is right to question the efficacy of anti-depressants. As she told me, people have every reason to be skeptical of whether the pharmaceutical giants making huge profits off these drugs have "pure intent"https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-marianne-williamson-has-a-point-about-psychiatric-medication-20190823-4mv7ef4ccfcptcky2sxqecutym-story.html …

Note: a critical discussion of the societal impact of these still little-understood drugs does not preclude acknowledgement that many people do claim they've been helped by them. But as Williamson says, we should want to understand why there's so much despair in the first place

Williamson's comments are useful because she's talking about the medicalization of despair (a very new development in human history) through a political frame. BigPharma is widely loathed. Why shouldn't the economic motive behind the sudden ubiquity of these drugs be scrutinized?

I was once prescribed Zoloft by a doctor within ten minutes of meeting them. They ignored the actual health condition I went there for, which went un-diagnosed, and I paid a heavy price for it. Public clinics are the worst for this.

I think there are a few things Marianne is actually right about, and this is one of them. Tom Cruise is right too regarding his skepticism of psychological drugs. Marianne is also right about wanting people to be free to choose to decline vaccines, in my humble opinion...

My brother went to see a psychiatrist and within 15 minutes he asked what what my brother 'wanted' to take.

What's more disturbing is the FDA allows straight to consumer drug marketing. People see a doctor and expect an RX now. For every person that complains they got an RX there are 10 that complain they didn't get an antibiotic RX for a viral infection. Meds are overprescribed.

What? How else are patients who don’t really like the medication they are taking now supposed to know a new medication is on the market that might alleviate some of their symptoms?

The fact that you can go see many doctors after one visit and get psych meds without proper evaluation is beyond me.

Worse when they prescribe multiple medications after one meeting. It’s an issue.

And we cannot ignore the connection between SSRI antidepressants and mass killings, which are happening all over the world. No one seems to remember the depressed Germanwings pilot who purposely crashed that Airbus into the Alps. Strong correlation to almost all of these events

Most don't have the knowledge to do it right. I had a master's degree in psych, some clinical practice, and plenty of experience talking with shrinks and docs. So I was able to set my own course (also with zoloft) and be free of the drug in <1 year. My exception proves your rule.

@mtracey The connection b/t vaccines & autism lacks scientific evidence (tho adherents are sincere in their beliefs). So why is the link between autism & antidepressant use by expectant mothers seemingly never discussed-despite studies confirming same?

...I hasten to add that these medications have drastically improved the lives of many. Point being that every medication has risks and benefits. Ignoring risks due to profit motive tho is both troubling and unsurprising.

Similar thing happened to me. Things got worse in my life so they upped my meds and I ended up taking the max dosage (200mg) every day for about 3 and a half years I think. Totally distorted my ability to think and process emotions. Getting off Zoloft was a fantastic decision.

No medication should be prescribed w/o a genetic test done to see what ones body can accept/not accept. It’s not common, but should be mandatory. Recently took a med for 6 yrs, turns out my body doesn’t process that class of medication. Felt nuts saying to dr it wasn’t working.

There's also a rush to expand mental health treatment in light of a mass shooting, although, as you noted, the shooter more often than not was already being treated. Perhaps the solution is for society to wean itself off of mental health treatment.
