Mitt Romney's campaign in 2012 described David Koch as the "financial engine of the Tea Party." When Republicans gained total control of government 5 years later, the Tea Party disappeared and its "small government" philosophy was exposed to have been a fraud

For example, Trump just "ordered" American companies to change their business practices in accordance with his preferences. "Tea Party" opposition to that "order" will be confined to Joe Walsh and two pundits on Twitter

I don't know about folks who may have hijacked the Tea Party, but back at the beginning it was a philosophy rather than an organization, that did believe in small government, ticked off by Bush's bailout of Wall Street

The Tea Party was repeatedly told if we would just vote "R's" into power, we could rein in entitlement spending, overturn Obamacare, defund and end the PP slush fund from US treasury to Dem pols, and secure the border. All we got was 2 SCOTUS and a MSM still saying I'm a racist.

Which is why the Kochs stopped pumping so much money in the last two cycles.

The Tea Party movement began as an astroturf movement. There was nothing organic about it. The Koch bro's weren't just the financial engine, they were the ignition and fuel too.

I live not far from one of their offices. I was not disappointed by today's news. The fewer billionaires influencing politicians, the better. They usually play both sides of the aisle.

The Tea Party has been acknowledged as an astroturf movement spirited up by Dick Armey after Bush lost in '92, partially due to the fiscal conservatives' (remember them?) votes siphoned off by Perot. Worked as designed.

Bush bailing out Wall Street was the impetus for the Tea Party. Republicans screwed over their constituents. What else is new? And people wonder why Trump is in the WH...

Well let's say it's a changeling of sorts. Didn't old Grover basically write that ideology back in the Reagan era, until he became famous for his yakking about making gov't small enough to drown in the tub? I'm just going by distant memory; someone else can look it all up.

I usually enjoy your perspective but this is a bad take. You’re ignoring the history of the tea party and how it evolved (after and not because of Koch). You’re also ignoring all the good Koch did.

Don’t forget ‘they’ through Paul Ryan crushed the grass roots movement eventually. We know even McCain was involved in the IRS scandal targeted against the Tea Party as well. The spurned believers were angry and ready to go. They all went Trump.

The tea party movement was supposed to be the next stage in our evolution but Bush took us back to Iraq in response to 9/11 instead. The horror of such bad decision-making trumped any possible good of scaling back government. It no longer needed tuning, it needed replacement!
