Marianne Williamson is right to question the efficacy of anti-depressants. As she told me, people have every reason to be skeptical of whether the pharmaceutical giants making huge profits off these drugs have "pure intent"https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-marianne-williamson-has-a-point-about-psychiatric-medication-20190823-4mv7ef4ccfcptcky2sxqecutym-story.html …

As I mention in the column, I was once prescribed Zoloft after a 20 minute visit with a psychiatrist I had just met. Only in hindsight did it become obvious how crazily perfunctory that process was, and the thought that it's being replicated on a massive scale is very disturbing

Note: a critical discussion of the societal impact of these still little-understood drugs does not preclude acknowledgement that many people do claim they've been helped by them. But as Williamson says, we should want to understand why there's so much despair in the first place

Williamson's comments are useful because she's talking about the medicalization of despair (a very new development in human history) through a political frame. BigPharma is widely loathed. Why shouldn't the economic motive behind the sudden ubiquity of these drugs be scrutinized?

I'd very likely be dead without antidepressants, Michael. Myself and many others.

I'm glad you were helped, but your personal experience does not preclude a critical, society-wide examination of the efficacy and influence these drugs.

Abominable virtue-preening argument. Nobody who deals with strangers has "pure intent", for among other reasons because they lack most knowledge about those strangers. Nevertheless companies often produce good products. Get these idiotic Williamson arguments out of my timeline.

Companies only care about profits. Often it makes more sense to sell some shit which makes them addictive to that shit (and curing a little bit) in stead of actually curing the 1st time, because then people buy more. This is going on right now and downplay that is naive.

Thank you! 💜💜We live in an age when anti-depressants, tranquilizers , etc. are given to put a veil over normal human pain. Pain and sadness are as much a part of life as happiness and joy. My best wishes to you! #IStandWithMarianne

🙏 @mtracey. @marwilliamson is only expressing the truth. We need more professionals, psychiatrists and psychologists to step in & speak the truth. As a psychologist, I support her 💯 There are many research/ books/ that question the validity of DSM/ psychotropic meds.

A few low doses of magic mushrooms will transform your view of the world & break you free of the cycle of negativity that becomes the well worn path keeping you hostage. Had no idea it would do that ... spent maybe $30. It’s called magic for a reason.

2/2: We also are fortunate to have medical science and modern medicine to save those who truly need aid. However, it would be naive to think that Big Pharma is acting out of a sense of altruism.

Yes, we should be our own advocates! You want to believe that the doctors have your best interest at heart. But with all the kick backs it’s hard to trust the motives behind the prescription of different medicine!

We’re all right to question. There’s a big difference between antidepressants for individuals who are depressed and prescribing them as a fall back for lack of diagnostic effort.
