It's been done before for decades, and the implication that millions of people who play games are potential mass shooters ready to snap at any moment really pisses a lot of people off. It's the same way that gun owners feel when leftists start taking about putting you on a list.
-
This. And it predates videogames..before that it was the various satanic panics with D&D and literally every new music genre popularized since frigging 1900.

Violent Video Games have greatly decreased the rate of domestic gun violence since their inception. Change my mind.

It's hard to change someone's mind when the person is right.

I don't play them at all. But, I'm pretty sure they don't kill people.

"it's weird how defensive people are about any critical inquiry into shape of the Earth" This is a settled issue, Michael. That's why.

No, it isn't.

Millions play video games...if playing games was the root cause we'd see a lot more of these tragedies
-
And the rate at which they occur would have some relation to the extent to which video games are played, which is not the case.

Studies reveal that ppl with guns are more likely to kill other ppl than ppl with videogames. Games used to have more impact, the boxes were bigger and had heavy manuals, so a throw into someone's head could cause a good bump, but nowadays they're too light to cause any damage.

It is defense to the point that it prevents any constructive criticism about the medium. For instance, what type of impact do violent games (or any type of media) have on disturbed and impressionable individuals? I don’t hear this being discussed.
-
there are literally millions of dollars blasted at researching this, with a fart worth of results. They even studied if shooty games "cultivate" "militaristic" attitude (no effect found). At this point it's like researching cold fusion

There was a memorable moment at the NC conference where JD Vance related that some tech execs explained to him that playing competitive video games will replace work for laid off people.
-
Hasn't it already? The technocrats shouldn't cry when the underclass turns around and uses the skills glean from first person-shooters in real life.

Everyone is defensive about the entertainment they enjoy Video games are kind of unique because older people who haven't played them just do not get them and never will It's infuriating for older people in positions of authority to scapegoat something they don't even understand
-
I can attest to the fact that as a kid who had the first video game platform called, Pong, I did not become a prolific pingpong player.
