This man is going to be wracked with grief for the rest of his life and charging him criminally serves no useful social function, it just compounds the tragedy unnecessarilyhttps://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/29/nyregion/twins-hot-car-father.html …

I agree with you. However, as a father I don’t understand how any clear-headed parent could just dispense with their paternal instincts and totally forget about their kids.

I remember the first time we went out to eat with our new daughter, I dropped the wife and son off at the door, parked and walked in without her. Thank goodness it was Nov and my wife was there to point out my mistake. If July and by myself? What a horror to even imagine.

If he isn’t criminally charged, than how do you propose we punish a parent if they intentionally kill their children in a similar manner and claim they simply forgot they were in the car.

It's possible to investigate and determine if there was malicious intent. Prosecutors do it all the time; many offenses require an element of intent.

Exactly. The grief he feels is punishment enough. He knows full well the awfulness of what he had done. I feel compassion for him. I hope he finds peace and forgiveness for himself. It’s a tragedy indeed...

I am a father of five (all grown) at no time did I ever come close to forgetting my kids in the car. These stories seem to be seen more recently then in the past. I wonder why?

I agree he will be grief stricken for the rest of his life but so do drunk drivers. Sometimes we make choices that lead to accidents, and if a life was lost we will be charged. I don’t think he should go to prison for the rest of his life though.

A similar thing happened in Ireland recently. I felt the same way. Don't even know why the media had to name the father either, cos i didn't need or want to know.pic.twitter.com/kOuG8Z6Hjt

There's a spectator sickness to American retribution, dial up yahoo news any time and there is ALWAYS a "bad mom" story. It's a genre that appeals to the lowest impulses.

If we don't charge him, munchausen-by-camry becomes a issue. I'm not making light of this horrible story but in this society, something happens once and then it become...a thing.

There is a huge resurgence of urges for primitive punitive violence and harsh punishment from both sides of the aisle at the moment and I don't like it one bit.

What I've never understood about these cases is how other passerbys never notice kids left in cars or their cries. 8hrs. Went by and no one noticed.

I agree that in this case it's just causing more pain. Also agree with the people saying he has to be charged if we don't want to incentivize other parents to kill their kids on purpose this way. I'd like to think the judge would has some discretion here and could be lenient.
