    Michael Tracey Retweeted Nate Silver

A tiny fraction of Trump voters in 2016 ever attended a Trump rally. Many did not even especially like Trump. One vulgar outburst 2.5 years later does not negate the fundamental material analysis of what occurred in that electionhttps://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1151841060395593728 …

Was gonna make some stale joke about there being a lot of "economic anxiety" this week but ... actually it's not really that funny and this week probably ought to give pause to the folks who were making the "economic anxiety > racial anxiety as a cause of Trump support" argument. https://twitter.com/Chris_arnade/status/1151824054757875712 …

Yes but there have now been many, many examples of Trump's racism and his supporters have continued to show unabated enthusiasm. Either they don't care which is itself racist, or they actually like it which is even more racist.

Just look at Trump’s rhetoric for clues to his victory: Logos = “It’s about the economy!” Ethos = “Trump’s a celebrated businessman, he knows what he’s doing!” Pathos = “His racism fires me up!” For many, it was likely all of the above.

Nate has gone beyond talking about numbers to now given his political takes on things.

Perhaps Nate could tell us what percentage of Trump voters were responding to economic anxiety and whether that number is bigger or smaller than the number who were persuaded by Russian memes.

People forget that neither Trump nor Hillary was popular. Some chose not to vote, some went third party when they never did before, others opted for "who do I dislike less on a given day." They won't vote for Dems simply by shouting "but Trump and his base!"

The NUMBER 1 reason Trump won the 2016 election is because an arrogant establishment tried to shove Hillary Clinton down our throats. Personally, I would have voted for Satan before using my vote to help legitimize these political gatekeepers and their elitist 'meritocracy'.

Also, it's fair to say that most Trump voters are motivated by racial anxiety, but in the end Trump won by winning over a lot of swing voters who voted for Barack Obama. That probably had more to do with economic anxiety or just a general desire for change.

Vulgarity is in the eye of the spin doctors. Any one can take a set of words and twist them to a malignant meaning. Is honey the “sweet nectar of the honeybee” or “stinging insect vomit”?
