Of course you can't blame every problem in Somalia on the US. That would be ridiculous. But it's even more ridiculous to ignore that the US is an active combatant in a war currently raging in Somalia, and just pretend that all its internal problems exist in a vacuum

In addition to regular airstrikes, there are currently 500-600 US troops in Somalia, plus an unknown number of contractors. Did you even know that? US officials say the current "training mission" (euphemism for combat) won't be complete till 2026. Sound familiar?

Here's an idea. US government officials should take responsibility for what their government is doing in foreign countries, rather than use the problems in those countries to score cheap partisan political points

To be fair many of Somalias problems can also be blamed on the Soviet Union betraying them in favor of an Ethiopian alliance, Somalias war and support of rebel groups in the Somalian areas of Ethiopia (leading to their defeat), which led to civil war and eventual US support.

You are a smart man and well versed in Somali history. Don’t forget the British involvement in dividing Somalia into 5 pieces.

1) The US military puts an enormous amount of effort into avoiding collateral damage. There are *hours* of combat footage on YouTube and elsewhere illustrating this reality. 2) The idea that the US is responsible for Somalia's status as a complete failure is absurd.

Unfortunately Obama was doing the same thing. The most powerful people in both the Republican & Democratic party are appallingly corrupt. Uh no. Somalia has been fucked up for decades due to a combination of complete lawlessness and rule by warlords, extreme religious radicalism and militarism, tribal society , extreme poverty, enmity with the rest of the world, piracy, etc etc. that’s why they are bombed.

At some point, if we drop enough bombs, it will all come out fine.

We shouldn't be bombing in Somalia. But we did not break it.

May be. But Somalia has been broken for a very long time.

Michael, That's probably an over simplification of the issues in Somalia.

Yep, it all started on humanitarian pretext, no more 'helping' other nations.
