Tennis seems to be the one pro sport where “instant replay” doesn’t interrupt the flow of play and in fact unambiguously improves overall precision/quality

Also the one sport where replay is a digitized image output, not a bunch of refs watching the play over and over in super slow mo

It's one of the few sports where the replay has no ambiguity. Other sports not even the commentators can 100% guess how a challenge will go.

I believe the term instant replay refers to the ability to replay an "instant" or "moment" of action, not that the process can be done instantly.pic.twitter.com/ln9xVDk3xI

Watching baseball recently I came to the conclusion that the home plate umpire in fact slows the game. We can know almost instantly if a pitch is a ball or strike.

Is it because it is executed so quickly (within the normal break between points)? Or is it because there's nothing else to confirm/adjust (like a game clock)? Or just because it is such a b&w call?

Depends, they could take a really long time looking at the play while tennis is a simple in or out.

Volleyball too - it’s because instant replay is structured around clearly identifiable lines in an open, uncluttered space, and limited by the size of the playing surface and the scope of reviewable plays.

Actual lines, at relatively short distances, pretty simple compared to other sports.

Sure. A sport that slow has lots of time for instant replay. Tennis is like flying a strategic bomber; long periods of boredom and short periods of excitement that go by so fast you miss them. So instant replay, yea...
