One of the most pernicious sentiments on the web is that compassion is a finite resource which must be distributed in a particular way, and specifically, that the level of compassion one deserves must be reckoned in relation to others who might need/deserve it even more

She's talking about "White man" and "White dude": is it really the public debate in USA so "balkanized"? If we replace "White" with "Jew" (which by the way it's his real ethicinity, if we have to think in these terms) the effect would be very different...

“White guy” is the Emmanuel Goldstein figure that people are allowed to channel their hate towards in a politically correct way

Everyone needs compassion, and no matter how much they deserve it we should give it them

She has no empathy, so she doesn't notice uniqueness in the potential damage to his reputation (which might take a lifetime to maintain or recover), and being made world-sized publicly humiliated.

I guess when you want commentary about someone being humiliated by a public video, you go to Michael Tracey who has mastered the art. Poor guy had his jaw wired shut for 18 months after that vicious attack from Maxine "Manhandler" Waters

She's a public defender in New York? The guy lives out of his car in New York. And he can't seem to stay out of trouble so it is a real possibility that one day he WILL be one of her clients.

I'm tired of a culture that videotapes or photographs *everything*. You cannot go anywhere w/o thinking you might end up on a social media site as a meme or for some other reason and perhaps endlessly made fun of for the rest of your life. And there's nothing you can do about it.
