You wouldn’t expect the prevalence of mood disorders to decrease because these drugs are not a cure. And suicidality is distinct from mood and the best drug for suicidality—lithium—is underused. And you may also have heard the planet is dying and the rich keep getting richer.

The subtitle of the Whitaker book mentions "The Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America". How does Whitaker mean this? Is it actually happening or is it a myth being foisted on us so drug companies can sell more pills?

Antidepressants are a band aid,if you’re lucky, with horrible side effects. I went to college to be a therapist. Once in the field I couldn’t stomach the ‘drugging and not-caring’ approach. Very few are interested on working to resolve the causes bc it’s not profitable.

The mentally ill are THE most marginalized ( and I hate that word ) group of people worldwide. Psychotropics keep them dependent on gov or they’re restitute on the streets. An Overwhelming situation that both sides of the isle completely dismiss.

I just went through a year of hell coming off SSRI's after 5 years. The withdrawals are horrific, but I had to do it. True, I no longer felt depressed, but I actually didn't feel anything. I was numb. Gained a shit ton of weight taking them too, as well as loss of sex drive.

It's been hard learning to live with depression again, but looking at natural ways of curbing it and hoping it pays off in the long run. At least I can feel the full gammut of emotions again.

For the few who were 'cheated by Nature' when it comes to natural dope levels, the can make all the difference. But this is not 'most'. A competent & honest psychiatrist can sort out which are those in a handful of visits: an M.D. with that specialty. Otherwise, too many on meds.

If a psychiatric condition becomes popular enough, it becomes normalized and then transitions into normal behavior. I would think that the drug industry takes a decade to address an illness and then finds out what they were told was illness is really normal. R & D is expensive.

Joe Dispenza's books e.g. You Are the Placebo, are fascinating ones on this subject. Another good one here: https://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Habit-Being-Yourself-Create/dp/1401938094/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=Dispenza&qid=1562813414&s=gateway&sr=8-2 ….

Many psychiatrists are trained more to prescribe drugs than to do psychotherapy. Drugs are necessary for some people, but they should not be the first or only resort.

Angell's pieces are excellent. Alexander Cockburn had a great piece on the marketing of Prozac, if you get a chance. He called antidepressants "liberalism in a bottle" for the way they substitute for systemic change. https://beyondthc.com/prozac-and-the-marketing-of-depression/ …
