Anyway, I would eagerly listen to a Marianne Williamson lecture on this topic

These are the seminal articles to read on the subject, from Marcia Angell in the NY Review of Books. Really changed my perspective when I first read them years ago; I still re-read from time to time https://www.nybooks.com/articles/2011/06/23/epidemic-mental-illness-why/ …https://www.nybooks.com/articles/2011/07/14/illusions-of-psychiatry/ …

I don't think that's unfair. Depression is a very intimate and personal condition with a lot of variance, and we have too much of a "one size fits all" thing when it comes to treatment. I don't think anyone would object to people saying we place too much blind faith in SSRIs.

You have to remember that there are different types of people with mental illness. Some want a pill and reject the idea of healthy diet, exercise and sleep. Some need a pill to get to the point of doing those things. A lot of people on medications need them. Some just want them.

They’ve helped millions of people with depression and anxiety, so no not really. They’re not the only treatment that should be used for depression and they don’t work for everybody, but they’re enormously beneficial to millions

When's the last time an SSRI had a commercial push? There are far more novel drugs prescribed now.

I work in social work and must admit I’ve become quite disillusioned with psych meds over the years

As someone who works in this field, we are just doing our best to use as many legit, evidence based tools to help each individual the way the need to be helped. Sometimes that means SSRIs, SNRIs, NDRIs, neuroleptics, etc. You can't package MI & TX. It's very personal.

When I was prescribed anti depressants I looked at the potential side effects and one was increased chance for suicide. Your tweets offer no surprise to me

Not for me, they have helped bring my depression and anxiety to wonderfully bearable levels, and I've honestly never felt happier. Protip? Don't say "I don't want to X, but...", you sound insincere. Some folks might not improve with SSRI's, but the numbers show majority does.

The numbers actually show they barely beat placebo effect and sometimes do worse

There problem is real Michael, a lot of people are really fucked up but you have to ask why? We never do that.

There is a great quote that I practice by: If your diet is wrong, then medicine is of no use. If your diet is right, then medicine is of no need.

What the hell kind of quote is that? What diet will cure my rheumatoid arthritis? My aunt's dementia? My step-father's chronic back pain?
