Lots of... colorful answers to this question but I’m not satisfied with any of them; it’s mostly folk wisdom presented as sociology, with a sprinkling of random anecdotal maximshttps://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1147965294259900416 …

In two sentences or less, what’s the fundamental reason why the US women’s soccer team is so good, and the men’s team is so bad?

The best female athletes in America play soccer. The best male athletes in America play Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, and like 8 other sports before even considering soccer.

@mtracey this is definitively the answer. If any athlete in any other country shows athletic prowess, they learn soccer. Ask the same question about why USA trumps every other country in Baseball, football, and bball and it’s pretty obvious.

No clue. Probably something to do with people in the USA don’t care about men’s soccer and people in other countries REALLY don’t care about women’s soccer

Its not rocket science, why would an elite male athlete who stands to make millions in a major sport choose poverty to play soccer?

The women use short passes to build a bigger play & keep possession; the men boot the ball over all their players in hopes someone is waiting for it at the other end thus always losing possession.

It’s quite simple, the best male athletes don’t play soccer. I believe that it may change when parents realize that the best soccer players in Europe are paid when they are much younger than the traditional American sports.

the way the sport is viewed and approached from a sociological standpoint means there is a built in importance and 100+ years of relevant history that the US cant replicate. There a great paper about nearly all nations sporting primacy being developed pre IndustRev
