Lots of people saying "just release them" which might play well on Very Online Left Twitter but in order to sell a policy change as dramatic as that to the general public -- even the Dem primary electorate -- you're going to need more than buzzy sloganshttps://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1146491860967481345 …

i know you don't actually give a shit about discussing policy but i'll pretend you do for a sec: "just releasing" people wasbasically policy until the '90s. mass immigrant detention wasn't a thing until the 1996 illegal immigration reform and immigrant responsibilty act :)

Just release them to go where? Wander around to die in the
or tents in the cities?1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

most migrants (and like, 99.99% of the children in CBP and ORR custody) have family members or friends in the US. the ones that don’t usually seek help from shelters or other charities

On what basis do you contend that I "don't actually give a shit about discussing policy"? How can you possibly know that? I'm happy to discuss policy with you, for the record.

idk man it probably has something to do with the fact that you've suggested ending the relatively new, extremely punitive policy of widespread detention is some ultra-woke fantasy and not like, just a reversion to pre-1996 practices

so either you're unfamiliar with the history of immigration enforcement and unwilling to just like, look things up, or you're familiar with it and you're making bad faith arguments regardless!

I wasn't making any particular argument, notwithstanding your reflexive ascription of bad faith. I was observing that activist/media opinion on this topic has shifted rapidly in a short period of time, and the underlying principles from which they're operating should be elucidated

So, what's your operating principle? You clearly have strong views on this subject. I won't ascribe bad faith, I'll simply ask. Is your operating principle simply that the US should return to pre-1996 practices? Or do you have more fundamental objections?
