Again, he doesn’t look at what politicians and activists are actually demanding - do not separate families, process asylum seekers as quickly as in the past, actually provide necessities of life to people while detained which should be for less than 72 hourshttps://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1146527502879416321 …

Lots of people saying "just release them" which might play well on Very Online Left Twitter but in order to sell a policy change as dramatic as that to the general public -- even the Dem primary electorate -- you're going to need more than buzzy slogans https://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1146491860967481345 …

I was just inundated with online media personalities and activists demanding no border enforcement and conditions-free release of all people in the facilities. They’re intrinsically against the concept of detention, not just the currently-existing detention centers.

You just went from “what are people proposing” to “what are online people proposing.” And in any case, “catch and release” was common practice for decades. Even that was only necessary because of antiquated immigration law that disproportionately restricts people from LatAm.

"Online people" are a type of "people" because they play an outsized role in the public conversation, along with likeminded journalists and activists, a huge number of which just informed me that their preferred policy is to simply release the detainees without conditions.

Republicans and democrats did just that for a few decades w catch and release. Immigration laws could be reformed to accomodate current hemispheric pressures. If you think these are nonstarters, could it be because you believe trump’s rhetoric about the threat of immigration?

I didn't say those are nonstarters, you're ascribing views to me which I never expressed. I do think it's notable that a large segment of the activist / journalist class seems to have embraced total border abolitionism with no commensurate debate about what that actually entails

I think people are moving in that direction because there is no evidence immigrants pose any threats to the US. And people coming to the US are fleeing their home countries for very good reasons. But you just seem to concern troll about responses to a humanitarian catastrophe

Here’s what it entails, which most people could tell you: don’t criminally prosecute entry. Actually consider asylum claims. Do not detain people, which serves no purpose. Remove obsolete nationality restrictions that are what force people to come illegally in the first place.
