Michael: it's Twitter and you're asking for nuanced thought that moves in and out of grey areas. Good luck with that.

You make good points. What do we do in the cases of non-Mexican and non-Central American illegal crossers? They went from wherever to Central America to then cross at our weak southern border. This is where the open borders chants come. https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/04/10/whats-happening-at-the-u-s-mexico-border-in-6-charts/ …pic.twitter.com/kkXVZErOj5

Perhaps that's why the vast majority of people lie somewhere in between your first benchmark and your second one.

The US helped create the conditions from which Central Americans are fleeing in the first place and bears moral responsibility for the ensuing migrant influx, including an obligation to treat people humanely

No ones suggesting abolishing border enforcement. They are saying make illegal crossing a lower level issue like a parking ticket instead of a crime. Also, add more judges to deal with the cases. Allow migrants to stay with family while waiting...

Native Americans didn’t live in one giant nation. They had borders and intertribal ware fare too.

Well, considering the US has been intervening in Latin America since the Monroe Doctrine, it's difficult to even offer an educated guess-either way, a non-falsifiable hypothesis. US has intervened, and the results have been catostrophic it stands to reason that it might be better

You can do border enforcement and also not lock people up for months on end for a misdemeanor crime

I don't know what to think about this "America created these conditions" argument. Take Iraq. America destabilized the country by killing Saddam. But Saddam was a despot, and you could argue people should seek asylum from him. So America would be on the hook either way.

There's also this. Granted that a case could be made that the US should be noninterventionist.https://mobile.twitter.com/driskilldanny/status/1150477873599270912 …

We should always treat everyone humanely, regardless of whatever responsibility we may bear for their condition, but we have a higher moral responsibility to our own citizens to ensure that our policies best serve them before anyone else.

Can you please specify what you're referring to? And dates when these bad acts by the U.S. occurred? Thanks.

there is an incredible amount of history between the US and South and Central America from the Banana republic to picking Guido in Venezuela you'll just have to do the research and it's in no way small best of luck
