Given the dubious sourcing (WaPo provides no justification for why the unnamed US "officials" are granted anonymity and not quoted directly) this looks a lot like a preemptive rebuttal of the forthcoming Barr findings, which could present a very different portrayal of Mifsud

NYT confirmed that the FBI sent a young female spy to "meet with" Papadopoulos in London under the auspices of Stefan Halper, another confirmed FBI informant. Yet WaPo depicts it as a "fringe" theory that Mifsud could've also been working in some capacity with US/western intelpic.twitter.com/Cjhq7J8LyY

If I had to bet, I’d say this new claim that he was deemed a “potential” Russian agent is a sign that we’re about to learn he’s actually a Western one.

Given the sourcing, it's pretty clearly a preemptive rebuttal of the forthcoming Barr findings.

Paul Sperry reported about this a few weeks ago. Said it was Comey's people that were putting this disinfo out. They know it's about to go sideways for them.

From the House Minority Report in March 2018 "In their approach to Papadopoulos, the Russians used common tradecraft and employed a cutout—a Maltese professor named Joseph Mifsud." https://fas.org/irp/congress/2018_rpt/hpsci-final-min.pdf … page 19.

Totally not news. Opinion mixed with dogma along with a generous dollop of innuendo and a pinch of slander. Classic WaPo hit piece.
