The "abolition of private insurance" line is the clearest instance of a made-up smear I've ever seen. Interesting msm hasn't used the term "supplemental private insurance" a single time.

Regarding the US House of Representatives version of the M4A bill (H.R. 1384), "...private health insurers and employers may only offer coverage that is supplemental to, and not duplicative of, benefits provided under the program."

Actually, in his bill it prohibits people from getting competing insurance. So in effect it does ban private insurance
-
That's weird, because here in NZ a lot of people use both the public and private systems. Public for emergencies and stuff insurance doesn't cover, and private for faster elective care.

Pretty sure that is accurate as Bernie has said before that private insurance could still be available for purchase for elective procedures...i.e. cosmetic, elective. As far as I know, insurance companies do not cover those types of procedures now so how would they cover it after

Why ban private insurance for primary coverage? The reason is if we allow for a two-tier system, the well-off who can afford pvt insurance will get excellent care while the govt plan will be starved for funds. Put everyone in the same boat & everyone will fight to protect it.

Both Sanders' & Jayapals' M4A bills prohibit private insurance from covering benefits that would already be covered under the govt plan. Since the govt benefits would be pretty comprehensive, private insurance would be allowed to cover not-medically-necessary (ie cosmetic) stuff.

It was horribly worded.

Corporate journalists, commentators, & politicians in the US often seem deliberately obtuse in their assessment of single-payer health care; I suspect their goal is to stoke irrational fear of Totalitarian State Control of the Medical System. Canada has private insurers too.

It was a Fox news style smear question...shocking that Dem friendly NBC asked it.

I personally heard Sanders himself say his plan would get rid of insurance companies. Several times. I don't know what this talk is. I've heard it from several people who should know better. It's not up to me to quote sources, I'd love to remember more than the PBS interview..
