Not a threat to *national* interests, but definitely a threat to the *imperial* interests since 1979. Empire can't tolerate dissent. The real question is whether US is a republic (with national interests) or empire.

Empire, of course.

National interests tend to dictate the rhetoric. Special interests are usually what dictate the policy w/regards to Iran. But no one talks about it in those terms because the framing of Iran as an adversary has successfully been ideologically ingrained in America

I don’t think even they regard Iran as a threat to the US. They simply don’t like it when independent Nations defy US dominance of their resources, economy & destiny.

They are if they're attacking cargo ships and the Strait of Hormuz is an oil transport "chokepoint".

If Western intel is correct, and Iran has directed/conducted two attacks on multiple commercial vessels and downed an unarmed surveillance done in international waters, and Trump blinked on retaliatory strikes at the last minute, the next Iranian strike will he much more reckless

Maybe you’re right but Iran does have more than a few True Believers. Letting them get nukes is a bad idea.

Totally agree, most people with even a modicum of interest in Middle East politics recognise this- we need to show others why there is an 'propaganda apparatus that has been ideologically committed to regime change for decades'.

Of course it’s a threat to US interests. It has 40,000 foreign agents, and heavily armed proxies like Hezbollah. War isn’t required at this juncture, but let’s not sugar coat Iran.

That's not a good place to draw the line, where you end up with too few people on your side of the line. Better place is to draw the line on (non)-interventionism, in military sense. The US, and all the other countries have and will continue to have competing interests.

Just say it. Which ME country has lied and pushed regime change for decades? We all know it and dual citizenship in Congress should be outlawed
